MARINE INTERIORS - Light and sound staged perfectly

Light and sound staged perfectly

Entertainment plays a key role on board cruise ships: At MARINE INTERIORS in Hamburg, leading international suppliers will showcase audio-visual technology

Hamburg, 8 August 2019 – From popular musicals and exciting dance performances to exclusive film shows, cruise ships offer a wide range of entertainment programmes. To be able to present such sophisticated performances at sea, these ships require state-of-the-art behind-the-scenes technology. Because of the unusual conditions on board, cruise ships depend on powerful software and precision engineering. The combination of materials used in ships is especially challenging for engineers and designers.

The suppliers exhibiting at the MARINE INTERIORS Cruise & Ferry Global Expo, powered by SMM are notable experts at finding the right technical means to overcome these challenges and integrating multimedia applications seamlessly into a given room design. The new trade fair will take place in parallel with the Seatrade Europe Cruise and River Cruise Convention at the Hamburg Messe fair complex from 11 to 13 September 2019. More than 100 companies from 20 countries are expected to participate.

Delivering the perfect sound

One of the exhibitors at MARINE INTERIORS is the interior outfitting specialist Kaefer. Last year, the Bremen-based company was involved in the completion of the cruise ship "Norwegian Bliss” where they provided the entire interior design and furnishings for the Bliss Theatre, among other works. Kaefer delivered the walls, ceilings, upholstered seating and fitted carpets for the 1000-seat auditorium, all of which are key factors for flawless acoustics. An exquisite listening experience is ensured wherever the time-honoured piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons provides its refined keyboard instruments.

But perfect sound is by no means all that matters. The right lighting plays a critical role, as well. To make sure every beam of light is aimed perfectly in the 'Theatrium' on board "AIDAnova", the entire lighting system is controlled from a bespoke control panel provided by MA Lighting International. Furthermore, the Hamburg-based media technology provider Amptown System Company joined hands with AIDA Cruises to develop a customised concept for the latest vessel of the ‘pursed lips’ series. In addition, the company installed a total of 460 kilometres of fibre-optic cable on board "AIDAnova" at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg. These high-speed data lines ensure smooth transmission of entertainment content as well as telecommunications, safety system and other IT network traffic.

Enhanced comfort

Providing just the right kind of lighting is essential not only in large auditoriums but also in passenger cabins and public spaces. A family-owned company with extensive experience in lighting solutions, the exhibitor Hera supplies between 4000 and 8000 individual lights per cruise ship, including wall-integrated lamps illuminating corridors, LED panels for backlighting photos or signage, or articulated LED ceiling spotlights. At MARINE INTERIORS, Hera will showcase an innovative product called Sky Window, a lighting solution simulating daylight.

The premium supplier JUNG specialises in innovative, top-quality electric control solutions for suites. "We provide comprehensive packages that ensure maximum passenger comfort. Whether opening curtains, switching-on a bedside lamp, or changing the ventilation setting, guests can operate any number of features in their cabins with the push of a button. A number of lighting scenarios are available to create the desired mood," says Axel Klaukin, Key Account Manager at JUNG.

Sharing know-how

The fiery light creations by the Austrian manufacturer The Flame are sure to attract plenty of attention. "Our fireplace simulations are absolutely unproblematic in terms of safety," says Chief Marketing Officer Wolfgang Deisenberger. "The authentic fire effect is created by atomising water and using custom-developed luminaries. There are no actual flames."

Fredrik Johansson, Partner and Project Head at Tillberg Design, knows where to install such accessories on board to achieve a maximum effect. In his presentation at the MARINE INTERIORS panel discussion "How design helps to convey, define or create brand identity” at the MARINE INTERIORS Forum in Hall A3, he will share a number of design tips and tricks.
