The German delegation visiting SWS (Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard)

Hamburg/Shanghai, 3 December 2018 - Starting today, an 18-member business delegation from the VDMA will meet with shipyards and Chinese shipbuilding organisations that are at the forefront of the country's entry into the construction of large cruise ships. "Whether we like it or not, China will play a growing role in the construction of large passenger ships - formerly a purely European domain - in the future. It is important for the German supplier industry to gain its own impression of the actual situation and the decision-making processes on site," says Hauke Schlegel, Managing Director of VDMA - Marine Equipment and Systems, who accompanies the delegation as well as a representative of the Ministry of Economics. "One motto of our talks in China is the plea for fair international cooperation for the benefit of both sides - and against protectionism.

The delegation trip starts today with a contact event in Shanghai and a visit to the Shanghai Waigaoqiao SY shipyard, which is currently working on a Vista class cruise ship for the Chinese market with Fincantieri's support. Tomorrow, Tuesday, a visit to China Merchants SY in Haimen will follow. A series of expedition cruise ships based on the Ulstein design is being built at this shipyard.

The delegation will then travel on to the south, where the VDMA has initiated a German Pavilion at the "INMEX China - Cruise Build" in Canton. A symposium with German exhibitors is scheduled for December, 5th.
